Seriously, if you are seeing a fucking ad from some bull shit pro-life group on my blog right now I'm as confused as you.
So don't sign their damn petition, but instead donate money to NARL or Planned Parenthood or Emily's List because if there is one thing I do not support it is the anti-choice/ anti-women /pro-women as incubators movement.

I'm a feminist and I'm quite annoyed how the word feminist has been fucked with by the work of conservative twits.
Here's the deal, if you have a habit of making statements like this, "I'm a feminist, but..." then you are really not a feminist you just enjoy the benefits of the things feminists fought for and still fight for to this day like, I don't know, being able to buy birth control as an adult without your husband or parents permission.
The comment is like working against access to abortion, but then being relived that that option is available for yourself or your daughter or your girlfriend.

It is too bad that we can't get her new book here in the US until NEXT YEAR and there are too many great quotes to choose from, but I'll leave you with my favorite:

"If you think that some sexism might be happening the question you have to ask yourself is are the boys doing it? Are the men having to deal with this kid of bullshit?"

Argument

I keep having this argument with my husband about women.

He is disappointed that once women go into management most of them act just like the male soul crushers at work.

He uses the C word...a lot....I do too, but that is besides the point.

His argument is that after all the trouble getting equal rights and feminism and all that that women have gone though to get where we, are we should be better people.

At least as management.

My argument is that it would be nice if that happened, but women are human beings and there are just as many douchey women* as men and in the end the women's rights movement is about women having the right to be an ass* as much as a man.

One of my favorite writers, Caitlin Moran summed my point up in her book How To Be a Woman:

“The purpose of feminism isn’t to make a particular type of woman. Living The Vintage Life

I don't even mind that they are housewives who live for the comfort of their hubbies.
That is their beeswax and what was the woman's movement for if not to allow women to make any choice they want?
Except they make the mistake that many do of forgetting that not everything was so good in the good old days.

Remember the good old days?
Without AC? Or computers? Or microwaves? Or chemo? Or polio vaccines?
Remember Jim Crow and "separate but equal".
How about having to get your husband permission to go on birth control?

Life was slower and in someways gentler so I do understand the desire to retreat to a fantasy world, but that is all it is because the world of Andy Griffith and Lucy never really existed.

In Which I Seethe

This has me boiling and banging my head on the desk.
"This" being a column in this weekend's Washington Post
by Charlotte Allen titled "We Scream, We Swoon. How Dumb Can We Get?"
in regard to some woman acting like idiots over Obama.
If she had left it at that, I might be agreeing.
I'm a little annoyed at the gals who scream and act silly about Obama.
Unfortunately Allen goes on to say that all woman are the
dumber sex because some of us think Obama is hot, watch Oprah,
read chick lit and can't do math.

Seriously, you ask are you sure this is not and article from The Onion?
Yes, I would assume the gal is serious and this is the Washington Post.

Sure I think watching Oprah is dangerous, and stupid and a complete waste of time (and that one of my reservations about voting for Obama is my extreme Oprah hate and a need to make sure she does not feel more powerful then she already does) and I hate Chick Lit, but I don't think that is because women are stupid, I think it is because some women have really crappy taste.
I can't do math, not because I am a chick, but because I can't do math.
It would be just as easy to bring up all the craptastic things men do, generalize them and decide that there really is nothing more moronic on earth then a man.
If men are so smart how does one explain The Man Show and American Gladiator?

There is so much in her article to piss me off that I'll let the gals over at Jezebel and Feministing
and Firedoglake where there are tons of ~gasp~ really smart women speak for me.

I will comment on this:

So I don't understand why more women don't relax, enjoy the innate abilities most of us possess (as well as the ones fewer of us possess) and revel in the things most important to life at which nearly all of us excel: tenderness toward children and men and the weak and the ability to make a house a home. (Even I, who inherited my interior-decorating skills from my Bronx Irish paternal grandmother, whose idea of upgrading the living-room sofa was to throw a blanket over it, can make a house a home.) Then we could shriek and swoon and gossip and read chick lit to our hearts' content and not mind the fact that way down deep, we are . . . kind of dim.

Tenderness towards men?
WTF?
Maybe I'm not a chick since when I look at most men, tenderness is last emotion I feel.
Or does she mean tenderness for them because in the end they are like little kids?
Or does she...arrrggghhhh...I give up.
I think I'll go hug my washing machine and be happy to make this house a home.
