Is This Becoming an Obsession?

Maybe I need to tile this blog "little Black 40's dress" since that seems to be all I am interested in lately.
Like this dress.
It is a simple, iconic shape of the 40's.
Black rayon, hugs the figure, but the beading (which I am always amazed when work like this has survived intact considering what I run across everyday and do not buy due to various age issues.) takes it from an everyday look to something The Black Dahlia would have worn.
Now there is another obsession; maybe because it involves "old Hollywood" and makes a great subject for a Noir film. The victim was lovely and her murder was gruesome. She (and that is her to the left, Elizabeth Short) is rumored to have worn black most of the time hence we are back to the 40's black rayon dresses that I seem to love.
If I lived another life and was another size I would wear these dresses with great 40's platforms and seamed stockings all the time.

All this brings me to the two movies I am looking forward to.
The Black Dahlia and Hollywood Land.
Old Hollywood and murder make the best movies in my book and the costumes will be right up my alley.
I can't wait.
Don't forget to stop by RedPony Vintage to check out that dress. Maybe you can buy it and wear it to see The Black Dahlia when it opens. Now that would be cool.

You Can File This Under WTF?

Why do white boys think they can rap?
Who is behind the pathetic display that was K-Fed's "debut!!!" on the
Teen Choice Awards?
I have a teen who has just howled whilst rolling on the floor while
watching this absurdity on tv.

Thanks to God that ole' K-Fed has Brittany's millions to live off of or that
boy would starve to death.

Just a quick pic of the best of this weekend's finds.
It includes:
  • Lots o' hats
  • A double breasted, black Persian lamb pea coat that has a lovely pink rose lining. The set included a black lamb purse muff and a scarf/twisted turban hat that matches the lining of the coat.
  • A FAB salmon pink LILLI ANN mohair swing coat!!!
  • And a lovely 70's faux fur Russian Princess walking coat.
All and all a nice weekend haul. Check Damn Good Vintage
to see these lovelies up close soon.

I just realized I had not SQUEED here yet.
Neil Gaiman will be in Arkansas in Nov.
Nov 14th to be exact.
In Conway.
Not much gets me to Conway except my friend
Kim, but I will be making the trek to spend an
hour or so in Neil's company.
My bitter little heart is quite happy at the moment.

~squee~

ON MY WATCH LIST:

Since I was talking about 40's vintage in my last post I thought
this snazzy dress from Couture Allure on ebay would be a
great addition to my watch list.
Perfect Noir style with a modified peplum AND a side hip swag.
What makes this dress even more special?
It is a freaking 2XL!
How often do us Zaftig gals find vintage in our size that is not
a glorified house dress?
It can be found here.

I wish I could find out more information on
Paul Sacs Originals.
I have this wonderful 40's vintage swing dress
in my store, Damn Good Vintage, on Mainstreet Vintage.
Great construction, nice slubbed rayon with
good heft to it. I love the big collar and and
flared A-line skirt. It may not be 40's Noir style,
but still a very wearable vintage dress.

One the other hand here is a McCall pattern recently listed at Sew-Reto Vintage Patterns.
Why do I love this pattern?
The nipped waist, smooth peplum and the smart pleated skirt. I've got a thing for 3/4 length sleeves.
Dig the hats too.

Over on the Arkansas Times Blog they posted a bit of trivia. We have been in Iraq longer then we were in WWll. I could go on a rant to express my disgust with this war and distrust of the current administration, but instead it would be easier to just post the comment of one Joel here:

I am a veteran and I resent any one telling a citizen of this country to "Shut up" when I fought for that right and many other things this country stands for.
Hell, if you want to make comparisons, we still have a long way to go before we reach the mark set by the 100 Years War. Does the length of a war have anything whatsoever to do with its value or lack of same?
Never has the Law of Unintended Consequences been so terribly proven as it has in this conflict. The dream of a Pax Americana has turned into a nightmare that is being inflicted upon many cultures and may eventually threaten all of civilization.
And the reason for it all: hubris. Pride, patriotism, and power mixed in a deadly cocktail which poisons the better natures of our souls.
The enemy is demonized so that we can justify releasing our own demons upon them. Both sides are committed to the wicked gods of war as their only recourse.
I hope we find some way to stop this descent into a culture of carnage. Our children and our children's children deserve better.

Amen and amen.

Oh no it is another BAD MOMMY!
This one has had the nerve, the transparent honesty utter gall to admit that she finds being a mom ~drum roll please~ BORING!
~gasp~

Freelance journalist Helen Kirwan-Taylor, 42, hit a nerve after the Daily Mail tabloid on Wednesday published her first-person essay under the headline, "Sorry, but my children bore me to death!"

The gnashing of teeth and rending of garments is overpowering.

What can I say? I agree.

I love this quote:
She’d rather go shopping or have her hair done than attend another child's birthday party.
Hello?
Me too.
Actually if the party is at Chuckie Cheese I'd rather a binki wax done by an M&S practicing dwarf. It is my belief that Chuckie Cheese is actually a Hell Mouth from whence the Four Horsemen will emerge.
I was always happy to have 2 or 3 hours free whilst The Boy spent time running around like a maniac, stuffing his face with lots 'o surgery treats and chugging all the soda in their house.
Of course payback is a bitch...

She says that when her children were young, she became a workaholic to avoid having to spend time with them. She begged the nanny to read them bedtime stories.
Bitch.
Where was my nanny?

Photbucket is back up. Here are the pictures of my newest patterns.

~gah~
I really wanted to show off some chic new vintage Vogue patterns
that I have listed on ebay, but photobucket does not want to
play today.
All in large sizes, B38 and B40, with free shipping.
I'll try to put up pics later, but for now all I can do is
point you in the direction of The Zaftig Goddess Vintage.
Go take a look, you won't be disappointed.
Mommy wars, anyone?

Sheesh, when will we stop eating our own? Why can't we just let other Mom's live their own lives? Why is it anyone's fucking business if a mom chooses to put her kid in daycare or not?
This is an older post from Reb on Home-Schooled by a Cackling Jackal. She had recently posted that her little one would be going to day care ~gasp~ two days a week so she could get some WORK DONE! The comments are not all positive.
That is too bad.
I see part time daycare as a win-win situation in many cases. Moms, especially stay-at-home moms who are also working from home, can really use a day or two ALONE.
I have a teen, that I homeschool, and I promise you I dearly love those days when I get a call from a friend asking can The Boy come hang out with Alex for a few days?
Hello? I've probably loaded him the van before she got all the words out of her mouth.
Look, no matter what we do, we are all gonna screw up our kids in one way or another.
Stay at home vs. not stay at home, homeschool vs. public vs. private school, no matter what if mom is driven insane then the kids are fucked.
Think of the children. Please.
Don't drive yourself batshit crazy trying to be everything to everyone and don't watch Dr. Phil....he makes baby Jesus cry.
And stop worrying about how other moms are raising their own kids...it really is none of your damn business.

I really love this Vogue Special Design pattern that I just listed in my eBay store. Very smart and perfect for the summer. A versitle dress that you can dress up or down with your fabric choices and how great is that neckline?

I have an obsession for vintage shoes, so shoe-incons.com is almost like porn.
What makes the site even better are the folks behind it.
Last week I was still feeling just a bit iffy about those Charles Jourdans below so I sent an email to the folks at Shoe-icons (which is THE SPOT on the web to drool over the best vintage shoes) and they were kind enough to validate my circa 1960's date and to point out that those shoes are featured on
the Charles Jourdan website in their history section for the 1960's.
~gah~
How did I miss that?
I was all over that website.
I feel so unworthy of the title of Goddess and even more unworthy to have these truly fabulous shoes at my humble abode for much longer.

Sunday, May 28, 2006

This week's damn good vintage auctions at The Zaftig Goddess Vintage:

Just a few, but they are special.
Vintage 60's Charles Jourdan pumps!!! How wonderful are these shoes?
A 50's Catalina pin-up swimsuit and a wonderful rayon 40's swing dress.
Don't forget to also search VBO on ebay to get the last of the great specials.

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Get thee hence to eBay for the Vintage Blow Out sale through the 31st!
Just search VBO, all items fixed price/Buy It Now, nothing above $19.99!
Tons of great items from your favorite vintage sellers.

Monday, May 22, 2006

Vintage patterns make me so happy.
Here are two I have at auction right now.
And in larger sizes!

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

On my eBay watch list, how can you resisit chiffon and polka dots?
Go take a look....

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

On my eBay watch list:

God, I want this LAMP!!!

I'm lazy.
~gasp~
NO really, I am. Sooooo lazy at times.
Look at how often I update this blog.
I'll be sitting in the bathtub, thinking of great new posts about things like I don't get American Idol or why do I find Johnny Knoxville sexy even though he looks like a guy who only changes his underwear once a week or you should see the MCM glass ashtray I got this weekend, it has orange fish on it.
Have you read those posts?
No.
Which brings me to one of my recent auction listings.
I bought this dress with the full intention of making it pretty again, selling as a wedding dress and getting uber bids on it.
~sigh~
Got so far as cleaning it and really that was a chore. The thing was dingy and now it is lovely. Unfortunately either it already had holes in the english net OR I created them. Either way it has sat in my room now for two months and I have come to the conclusion that I will never do it justice and am selling it.
So since I am lazy the dress is listed and someone is going to get a great buy on a beautiful tulle and lace evening gown.

Saturday, April 22, 2006

On my eBay watch list:

I have a weakness for antique and vintage corsets.
Must be all the historical romances I read in my youth. The heroine more likely then not had "lush, heaving breasts above her corset".

Well no matter, the seller linked below consistently has some of the sexiest and lush vintage lingerie listed. The corset below makes me wish for a 19 inch waist and a dance card to be filled.
Plus the pics are fab.

They are just movies folks....

That's all I'm saying.
You and your kids will survive not seeing The Greatest Game Ever Played this weekend.
You do not need to get all huffy because the video store won't let you rent another DVD until you pay that $35.00 late fee. How hard is it to return a movie to the drop box?
Yes, you do need two forms of id to open an account. Don't glare at me about it, I don't make the rules, nor do I own the company.
People get way too serious about renting movies....
When Mannis attack.

This auction for a vintage mannequin on eBay is a HOOT!
Go look and see, the 1st pic is your link.

I do have other loves besides all things vintage.
There is the Mr. Whom I have been married to for over 20 years.
Yes, that is an amazing amount of time.
And I am the unschooling mom of a 14 yr old who will hence forth be referred to a "The Boy".
But I have some deeper secrets.
Hmmmm, looking back over my posts I realize that I have not yet outed myself as the geek I truly am.
So I admit to all who read, that yes I am a Harry Potter fan. I read fanfiction and have an unhealthy obsession with Professor Snape.

Let's just say I would not turn down a chance to serve detention in the dungeons with The Potions Master.

I also am a Neil Gaiman stalker fan...another of my unhealthy obsessions. How can one not be?

This wonderful Vogue pattern can be found in my eBay store. I love the crisp, cool look of it and the adorable curved bolero.
Very chic.
Very "new look".
1953

Do you not love these shoes?
I wish they fit me...they would never leave my house.
Smoking hot Levine Stilettos and a cute pair of mod shoes.

<
On my eBay watch list:

MY GOD!
These are some fab, fab, FAB shoes.
Go and drool.

Monday, April 10, 2006

This weekend I went to a fun estate sale.
Lots of cool stuff. Too bad I only brought a certain amount of cash for the sale and had to pass up some great items waiting for the lots I really wanted to bid on to come up.
Bought a closet packed with purses and some party dresses....cheap.
The dresses all have a few issues so it will be awhile till I get them delt with.
Except a lemon yellow 50's shelf bust prom dress in pristine condition.
I'll list that tonight.
I think the best thing in the closet was this fab 50's snake purse which had been stored in the box it was sold in.
Sweet.

Thursday, April 06, 2006

This week at The Zaftig Goddes Vintage, It is Damn Good Vintage.

How cute is this pattern?

I have a very soft spot in my heart for Dior's New Look. In particular, the round shoulders, itty bitty waist and full skirt dresses. Here is a case in point:

Such a smart, fun dress in navy rayon faille.
Drop waist, circle skirt with the most adorable collar.

Saturday, March 25, 2006

What I found this weekend.
Yesterday I found this way cool lampshade at one of our local
stores for $8.

And today I find this cool floor lamp for $6.

Sweet.
I also got the sweetest pair of mod black and white oxford shoes ever.
No pics yet.

Friday, March 24, 2006

Sharon Stone scares me...not like Janice Dickenson does, but still....
I love shoes. I really, really love vintage shoes.
There is a short little interview over at the Vintage Fashion Guild blog with
Jonathan Walford to discuss his upcoming book "Fashion Footwear, a History From 1600 to Today".
Sounds like a purchase I will have to make at some point.
My favorite quote:
"I always think that you should collect what you love, regardless of what is trendy."
No truer words were spoken.
Mr Walford has some lovely items in his ebay store.

So here are a pair of shoes I LOVE that are in my store:

Yummy!
